Praia das Furnas
On our last full day on the southwestern coast we drove to Praia das Furnas. Originally we were hoping to go to the neighboring beach, Praia de Blimunda e Baltasar. However, after driving up a rocky and narrow road, we found ourselves at the top of a cliff with no way to get down to the ocean! So we backtracked and parked at Praia das Furnas where we learned you could walk from one beach to the next through a hole in the cliff during low tide. So MUCH easier! Another surprise about this beach is it is considered a "naturists" beach. I would say about 75% of the beachgoers were COMPLETELY nude! Ha! The beach itself was beautiful and the waters were the calmest they've been since we've arrived. For the first time in Portugal, I got into the ocean, even though the water was freezing! Needless to say I didn't last very long!
In the evening we drove to the Sagres to eat at Three Little Birds, a cute hipstery restaurant. Today, we drove about an hour and a half to Tavira, another coastal town, where will be will spend the next two weeks. We've had an awesome time in Luz and being able to explore the southwestern part of Portugal. Looking forward to seeing what the southeastern part of the region looks like!
