Sullivan's Island

This past Sunday, we headed to Sullivan’s Island, a two and a half mile barrier island north of Kiawah Island. Sullivan’s Island has a strong military background and was the site of a major Revolutionary War battle, The Battle of Sullivan's Island, as well as being involved in the first shots of the American Civil War.  It is home to around 2,000 residents and has a small beach town feel.

As it is only an hour’s drive from Kiawah Island, we arrived just in time for brunch at The Obstinate Daughter. Alex and I shared the breakfast pizza, a sticky bun and the smashed/fried potatoes. Everything was delicious and we left the restaurant with our belly’s full!

The beach here is a bit more overgrown and has small mounds of beach grass and brush. It was really windy, so we didn’t stay too long on the beach, but enjoyed a short walk to work off some of our meal!

One of the last lighthouses to be built in the United States, Sullivan’s Island Lighthouse, stands 140-feet and features a unique triangular and slim design. I’ve never seen a lighthouse this shape before and it looks really goofy in the distance! Although it is not open to the public, it is still in operation and lights the way through Charleston’s busy seaport.
