Lake St. Clair

On Saturday, we drove to Lake St. Clair, a place we have been anticipating since we first started planning our trip to Tasmania.  When researching things to do in Lake St. Clair back in June, we came across the hotel, Pumphouse Point, and knew immediately we wanted to stay there.  The hotel has been converted from a former pump house and sits out in the middle of the lake.  From the sitting area in the hotel, we were even able to see a platypus our first evening!!  I cannot even tell you how excited we were!

The hotel offered a "bread line" in which we dialed a number and a warm loaf of sourdough bread was delivered to our room!  We most definitely took advantage of this!

Sunday, we drove to the visitor center and hiked the Platypus Bay Trail (unfortunately no platypus sightings from this trek) and then continued to hike part of the Overland Track.  We hiked for a while before grabbing lunch at the Hungry Wombat Café.

The original inhabitants of Lake St. Clair named the lake Leeawuleena, meaning “Sleeping Water" and it is not hard to see why - the water is super calm and peaceful.  It is also Australia's deepest lake with a maximum depth of over 520 feet!

The hotel has boats that could be borrowed and we took one out in the afternoon to paddle around the lake.  We were also given life jackets and a two-way radio in case we got stranded!  It was fun being out on the water and we sat and floated for a while enjoying the scenery.

I'm so glad we were able to stay at Pumphouse Point, it was truly a unique experience and one I will not soon forget.  We left for New Norfolk on Monday morning which is the last stop in Tasmania before we head back to mainland Australia.
