A Beach to Ourselves...
Wednesday we headed to the small beach town of Salema where we hiked through a forest to get to the isolated beach of Praia da Figueria. The hike is only about half a mile and once we got down to the bottom of the hill, we were rewarded with a small beach we had all to ourselves for the first two hours we arrived. Even after that, we shared it with only one other family.
After stopping for lunch in Sagres, another beach town along the coast, we drove to Sagres Fortress. It was here where Henry the Navigator, in the 15th century, decided to sail the seas around the western side of Africa. Although the views of the ocean were amazing from this vantage point, the fortress itself is not much to look at overall.
The last stop of our day was to Cabo de São Vincente lighthouse. The lighthouse sits at the most southwestern part of Europe and is one of the brightest in all Europe as it can be seen from over 60 miles away.
In the evening, we walked over to the beach near our apartment to enjoy the sunset; however, what really grabbed our attention was the moon!! It was huge and lit up the whole sky and water below. It was a sight to behold and hopefully (fingers crossed) we'll see another bright moon tonight!
