Golden Gate Park

Earlier this week, Alex and I visited Golden Gate Park where we spent the afternoon exploring. The park is huge - expanding over 1,000 acres. Golden Gate Park is the fifth most visited city park in the United States and is larger than Central Park in New York City! You could easily spend several days sightseeing around this place!

One of the most beautiful buildings in the park is the Conservatory of Flowers. This building has been a part of the park since 1879 and holds many rare tropical flowers and plants from around the world. The Conservatory was closed the day we visited, so we were unable to go inside. Instead, we spent some time walking around the building (I particularly liked the stained glass windows!).

We then walked over to the San Francisco Botanical Gardens where we spent the majority of our afternoon. Because of San Francisco’s unique micro-climate, the gardens are able to recreate conditions of Central and South America, Southeast Asia and New Zealand. The park is organized by region and we could walk through the native plants and flowers of these countries and several others. My favorite parts of the park were the Redwood Groves and the Succulent Garden.

Golden Gate Park was a great way to spend a sunny afternoon and as we went on a weekday, not at all crowded. There is so much to do and see in the park and I want to come back again to visit the Conservatory of Flowers, Japanese Tea Garden and the de Young Museum.
