Bayside Coastal Trail
Tuesday morning we hiked part of the Bayside Coastal Trail, a 17-kilometer coastal walk from Brighton to Beaumaris in Melbourne. We did not complete the whole trail but started at Sandringham and walked through to the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary.
The trail was well marked and provided great views of the ocean. It was a sunny day and we spent several hours taking our time and enjoying the views.
Secured to this picnic bench was a briefcase full of poetry. People were encouraged to read what was there and to leave their own poetry if so inclined!
We made a stop in Half Moon Bay, a crescent-shaped beach surrounded by cliffs. In the bay is a half-sunk wreck of the HMAS Cerberus which you can see from the beach. While in Half Moon Bay, Alex and I also shared the fish and chips at Cerberus Beach House.
Half Moon Bay also had a couple of brightly colored bathing boxes similar to Brighton Beach.
Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary is a cluster of sandstone platforms home to an array of marine life. People are encouraged to explore these rock pools and luckily we came during low tide, so we could walk out into the water and see for ourselves. Although we didn't see much in the rock pools, there were a lot of birds and it was fun to explore.
I made sure to get to the St. Kilda Pier early this time so we could secure a spot on the boardwalk closest to the water. The penguins tend to arrive 20-40 minutes after sunset and we were lucky enough to see a few of them. As we were heading home, two were crossing the pathway right in front of us! They were so small and cute! I wasn't able to take any pictures as it was pretty dark and flashlights and cell phone flashes are not allowed as it disorients the penguins. However, here are a few photos from another gorgeous Melbourne sunset.
